In the first civil war, Henry VIII led a rebellion against his king. He was sentenced to life in prison but is freed and goes right back to fighting. His wife intervenes on his behalf so he doesn't have to be executed by royalist officers. The author says there's no political or intellectual history for him to draw from that represents these ideas.
