There is an most permanent and almost universal religion in the archipelago. This faith, which has never yet been confirmed by one single real miracle, is none the less very alive and persistent. It's a perfectly modulated and articulated passage that the more you insist upon irreligion and atheism in ways that you can see, the more frantically and savagely and primitively religious you become. But the one thing you will refuse to worship is god. You think you've made yourself an atheist, you have really just made yourself a religionist of the most primitive kind.
