Otis Reading's father encouraged him to become a gospel singer. When he started performing secular music, he joined a band by Gladys Williams. She trained both Fats Gunder and Louis Hamlin who went on to join the lineup of James Brown's band that made live at the Apollo. At all of these shows, the song he performed was one that Miss Gladys had rehearsed with him, Little Richards, He Be Gbe's.
