In both the lower melody and his overdubbed higher harmony, he's stopping just before he fully reaches each note. He also doesn't hold the note out for a long period of time. And as a result, you get this really unsatisfying end of the phrase. There's also the fact that immediately after he gets off the vocal notes, this trumpet sound comes in over on the right.

Tim Howes is a doctor and saxophonist based in Bristol, UK. He started on sax at age 10, playing Beatles and Stones covers in a school band, then became obsessed with jazz theory as a teenager, tracing how jazz harmony flows through other musical styles. Sax playing eventually took a backseat to studying and practicing medicine, but he has passed his love of music on to his kids. (And he still sounds pretty great, in my opinion! ~K)
