Research published in the Journal of Nutrition put test subjects on a calorie equivalent diet and had them include either five cups of oolong tea or a control beverage. After measuring their metabolic rates, participants drinking oolongTea increased their energy expenditure by 2.9% compared to those drinking just water. This was the equivalent of burning an additional 281 calories per day on average.
