i agree that while you can secure some degree of referential grounding from text only training with the right kind of learning objective that secures world involving functions. it is possible that or suddenly if you look at the human case of course we are embodied systems and rely on rich multimodal sources of information to understand the world. Our concept of a dog again is embodying information about what dogs look like and what dogs sound like when they bark and what dogs feel like when i touch them and so on. That is presumably missing entirely from language models trained on text only.
