Michael Wolraich's new book traces the history of micro-lending in Boston and Philadelphia. He says it began with a loan made to tradesmen two centuries ago by Benjamin Franklin. The idea was that people would lend money, pay it back at interest, and benefit the greater good as principle accrues. But when Franklin died he left behind an enormous amount of cash which is still being used today.
