Matthew takes a passage that was about something else and makes it about jesus. There are anumber of these fulfilment passages in matthew one and two. The dead sea scrolls tend to interpret everything as dealing with the founder of the dead sea scroll community, somebody they call the teacher of righteousness. And rome is often the bad guy. But i am not convinced. I think matthew's familiar with isaiah. I think he knows what was going on in the old testament. So why in the world would Matthew say, jesus fulfils this? Because jesus does.
