Human groups need a certain effective population size in order to be able to propagate themselves especially over long periods of time. Even the crappiest modern hunter gatherer compared to their prehistoric brethren are still leaving a dent on the local ecology. I think when humans show up our ecological footprint or thumbprint whatever you want to use their metaphor it's pretty heavy, he says. "I keep on coming back around thinking about humans as being an invasive species"
