The Gold Clause Cases
The gold clause cases were the most important event in American history. FDR essentially threatened that he was going to pack the court with judges who disagreed with his policies. He paid people $20 and 67 cents for each ounce of gold, then they sold on international markets at $35. The economy turned around after two decades of depression and war under Harry Truman.
