The one that was most uncomfortable with was the idea of cookies are same site lacks. I do believe it's safe to do if you don't have like post message APIs or something like that. One technique you can actually do is still leverage your cookie based authentication to exchange for a token. With Chrome extensions, you can actually make privileged requests from the service worker and background page.
