The Politics of Envy
Americans have gone from an understanding of the federal government as a political body with specific and limited powers to whatever powers sitting politicians think it should have. When we talk about poverty on the one hand and wealth on the other, well, we should all get very worked up if people are getting poorer over time. But that's not happening. It might be the case that our politicians are trading in envy and not in cold hard facts.
