"For our sin will not be small if we eject from the episcopate those who have blamelessly and holily fulfilled its duties," says Clement of Rome. The passage is addressed to the Corinthian Church of roughly the 90s CE. It's an early statement on ecclesiastical authority, written by a man who was technically a pope before the bishopric of Rome acquired centrality.
