The history of computer chess actually goes back before computers although these early attempts are not very concrete in terms that they didn't really create a chess playing program. The first attempt at a mechanical computing device was actually a farce that wasn't really a machine at all. In the early 20th century there were mechanical machines that could do very simple end games for example Rooking King vs King and this was again predating computers.
