Sharks' skin is covered in features called dermal tentacles. The shape and theplacement of those tentacles all over a shark's body must have something to do with reducing drag. So it's as if the water is actually pushing the shark forward, not just reducing drag. It's actively helping the shark to accelerate through the water. But why would speed have been selected for in their skin water surfaces if that's not what they're doing? I don't know of what i speak, but i don't picture sharks in high pursuit of their prey.
