The Differences Between Saline and Balanced Fluids
Sidney Ringer invented his famous solution in the 1880s, and this was a time when Ivy fluids were kind of a drug du jour. A pediatrician named Alexis Hartman added lactate as another source of bicarb buffer because lactate is metabolized by the liver. So that's how we get the lactated Ringer's that we have today.
