In the early 1900s, there was a lot of this kind of redirecting of rivers into canals. Those canals and those locks would very quickly fill up with silt. The Colorado broke through in 1905 to steal water for the Imperial Valley. And we're talking about this great basin where sometimes the distances between an area that has no outlet to the sea and a river that does flow to the sea are just one rise.
