What's the Point of a Staff Officer?
Hagg would not have recognized his term, but best practice. All the time the British army is engaged in something called best practice. They look at a battle, what worked, what didn't and disseminate their findings to other armies. And this is just the stuff of modern warfare,. It takes staff officers, it takes generals, and it takes someone like Hagg at the top to coordinate it. He was an enthusiast from machine guns. In fact, if Hagg has a problem, he's often too keen on new weapons. There's no point building 300 tanks and sending them forward if you don't know how to drive them - which we didn't in 1917.
