If you want a seat at the table, you really have to care about other designers. You start by pouring into these folks and trying to meet needs. A servant leader is the best kind of leader. Don't just do it because seniority seems like the logical pick. And make sure that their ego is not theirego.

Pek Pongpaet teaches us how to be business-minded designers.
