Plutarch says marius was rendered speechless by grief and indignation. He retreats to a barren island off the coast of tunesia called kircena, to regroup. And on that desert island, marius had a lot of time to reflect. There had been disturbances before, but never a roman army capturing rome. What had happened? Was marius to blame? Yes, perhaps he regretted the plebicite and e espect, but how could marius be the one to blame when sulla was the man who had broken the most fundamental rule of all?"
