The persistent labelling of menstrual periods as a distasteful and shameful subject has profound implications for public health. The stigma surrounding periods can lead to this damaging silence where we are shamed from talking about periods because it's not polite conversation. We don't know whether our own periods are normal because we don't hear the experiences of others. N it creates enormous inequities for people who menstrate.
