I don't even see him as naive, exactly. In fact, some of the times other characters thought he was naive. His lack of observance of social graces and all that stuff, it's not that he doesn't know what they are. It really does seem he's just acting out of principle or inclination, but it's not out of a lack of knowledge. I was more thinking of his self-knowledge.
