In short, i think it probably really depends. The first step is excepting that you have a problem for everything. I think the necessary second step is believing that you have the ability to make a positive impact on your life. And then i think that the third step is s having experiences that contradict the painful story and then actively internalizing them. Those are the three necessary things.
