Chaucer's the Wife of Beth
The wife of Beth interested Chaucer in a way that other characters did not. She allows us much more access into her sense of self, she says. Early medieval scribes were obsessed with trying to argue with the wife of Beth really. So they're fascinated by her, but they're also troubled by what she says.
