The biggest reductions poverty, as you say, have come from big transformations in economic policy. So the big opening up of india and china towards more market oriented economies. And i'm not saying market solve everything, they absolutely don't. But when you've got a system as screwed up as communist china, making prices have some influence can really help transform the economy.
