Animals were often used as barometers of behavior in a way that we kind of still do today. One famous example comes to us from Uncle Tom's Cabin, the most famous American antebellum novel written by Harriet Beecher Stowe. That if somebody mistreats helpless animals under their control, that it's actually an indicator for things like sociopathy.
