When i first started learning chinese, i learned that there were four tones and what they were. The third tone was quite difficult because it was initially explained to me as an up and down tone. And i noticed very early on that it didn't follow along with that when people were actually speaking in native conversations. So i got told by native speakers that that was wrong a lot of the time.
