The Importance of Autonomy in Healthcare
In many cases in the Netherlands, doctors refuse requests for euthanasia. So doctor makes the ultimate call, not the patient. And behind the doctor stands society which sets down the legal parameters. It decides which kind of citizens should be able to kill themselves or to be killed by their doctor. Some people say you must kill the pain, not kill the patient. That reflects this key moral and legal distinction between intending to alleviate suffering, even if foreseeable it may as a side effect short in life.
