The Myths Around Napoleon

A generation before Marx, right-wing conservatives and reactionaries also used Napoleon as a cautionary symbol. To them, he was an avatar of the destructive chaos they believed was the inevitable endpoints of all democratic and liberal ideas. Both versions of Napoleon serve a useful symbolic purpose in explaining the respective political ideologies but it's harder to say which is closer to the truth.
