The Future of Ubuntu Core Development
I imagine this will be an alternative offering for people who want the advantages of an immutable read-only Ubuntu core with desktop applications. I'm fairly sure there won't be any kind of immediate plan or even medium term for plan to replace traditional Ubuntu desktop. For at least the next two or three LTSs, it will be side by side. And a lot of it is to do with the maintenance burden of updating packages for lots of different versions of Ubuntu and their dependencies.
