Acute respiratory infections make up about 10% of all ambulatory visits in the United States. Antibiotics on a population basis are more prescribed in the south of the United States as compared to the West, Midwest, and East. The theory is that it's cultural, that that's just the norm, that you get antibiotic for respiratory symptoms.
