Gaius marius was found in a hut by an old man who made his living from the lakes at his feet. The townsfolk of minterno had received official orders from rome that marius is to be executed immediately if found. They call for volunteers to do the deed, but everyone refuses. And so out of the swamp they drag the vanquisher of the cimbri, the saviour of the republic, naked and covered with slime, and they tie him up. But soon he hears commotion in the hut.
