The History of the NES
All of the different notes that you can produce from the NES just sound like slightly different varieties of electronic beeps. These beeps and boops were made using one of the console's five sound channels. One of them can play short samples, like recorded audio samples, but because of technical limitations, they sound terrible and are very rarely used. In Japan, Zelda was actually released on something called the Famicom Disk System.
