Dante's famous injunction, and Luso Hopi, who passed through here. Almost all the ancient Egyptians had seven gates. The Zoroastrians had eight,. And pretty well, everybody had at least one gate you had to pass through. Ishtar is setting it to the underworld to visit her sister. She had to pass with eight gates and losing an item of clothing at every one. So, yeah, they always gates. Sometimes they're bridges you have to cross in order to get into hell.

Some will answer God, but for the purpose of today’s podcast discussion we’ll put that possibility aside and look into the human origins and history of the idea of Hell. In Hell & Damnation, he takes a detour to examine the manifold ways in which societies have imagined the afterlife.
