The Origins of Invisible Matter in Physics

In the 19th century physics became about the invisible. It became about fields that you couldn't see, electromagnetic fields and ideas about the ether. We have to invoke this idea, this concept, that it's some kind of invisible matter. And then we can start to talk about it. But there's really no justification for doing that, other than that it gives us something to talk about.
