In 18 32 in preston, lancashire, seven men signed a pledge to abstain from all liquors of an intoxicating quality. This became known as the site of the temperance movement in britain and was supported by millions of working class people. With me to discuss this episode is David beckingham, associate professor in cultural and historical geography at the university of nottingham.
