I don't like variable annuities, which kind of takes in active investing mutual funds and puts em in an insurance wrapper. I think it's an expensive way to accomplish that. And i don't like equity index anuities,Which are tied to the stock market. Its be very hard for them to fight inflation and get where they need to be in that format. But if rates were higher, why wy look at that differently? No, if you can get to that at a very low cost and you have a reasonable return, you can start to look at it like a bond like portfolio with a little more certainty.
