The Roman Diet - Fish and Olive Oil
Isotope studies into the remains of people who died in the seaside town of herculaneum when vesuvius erupted in 79 c e. Have added more detail to what researchers already knew about their diets. Earlier, archaeological work had uncovered evidence of fish, shellfish, olives, cherry s peaches, lentils and beans. But these isotopic studies suggested that nearly a quarter of the protein in these people's diets came from fish. And more than ten % of their calories came from olive oil.
