The Ironies Do Abound
After World War II Harry Truman signs executive order 9981 commanding the desegregation of the armed forces. To get there we've had to go through some pretty horrible incidents of black veterans being mistreated primarily in the south. In Vietnam blacks were serving in combat units out of proportion and taking higher casualty rates then in response to this sort of reformist push the government tries to make sure that African-American soldiers don't see combat as much.
