In the medical world, there is this idea of like kind of fraser competence, or gillic competence. If you are above 12, but under 16, and you want to consent to a medical treatment, then you can, and your parents can't then stop it. Whereas, by default, an under 16 cannot consent to medical treatment until unless the parent consents to it on their behalf. It's just assumed that until you hit the age of 16, which is this arbitrary line her that, hang on. This is a bit weird.
