Military leaders are often chosen for their affability or appearance. But the bluff appearance too often masks doubt and pessimism. The best generals, Dixon concludes, have been the Mavericks. Leaders like Erwin Rommel, Horatio Nelson and Napoleon Bonaparte can resist and roll back the negative psychology of the military organization. Unfortunately, the average general is not this sort of man.
