Introduction
In 1852, the Hudson River hosted one of the deadliest maritime disasters ever reported. US Airways Flight 1549 landed in the middle of the river after a flock of geese took out its engines. The first official steamboat race ended in a draw when both boats crashed into each other at five miles an hour.
