The Normans Set Fire to York
In 1066, the Normans were preparing for a siege of York. The city was surrounded by Danish and Northumbrian forces. Norman garrisons thought they could cross their moats using debris from nearby houses. They set homes on fire in an old English town where most everything was largely made out of wood. And you'll never guess what happened next: It spread out of control.
