Thereis movement in every period, from the annual routs of hunter gatherers in the paleolithic to peasants taking heir wool to market in the middle ages. Long distance trade in luxury goods like spices or amber or gold jewelry is a much different proposition than the bulk trade in grain or pottery. You need different underlying institutions and technologies for the latter than the former. The mass movement of enslaved people across an ocean speaks to a much different world than one in which tribes from either side of a river exchange marriage partners.
