The Harat Uprising in April 1979

The director of Kabul University before the April Revolution, Abdullah Manjali had been educated in the West. He believed the PDPA's reforms, however ruthlessly implemented, had set his country on the right course. The pivotal Harat Uprising in April 1979, he thought, was orchestrated by military officers with ties to Iran and far fewer civilians died in the violence than the rebels claimed.
