The Inter-Cluster Medium and Dark Matter

The galaxies within the clusters may never come back together. The gas cloud from one cluster, what we call the inter cluster medium does significantly interact with that of the other. If there were no dark matter, most of the mass of this cluster system after the collision would be roughly where the gas is when a bit of it out in the outskirts are.
