How to Write a Novel About the Second World War
I suppose a terrible thing is that as a novelist, you're always looking for the telling detail. But you're also looking for to feel authentic in some way. I don't really want to write a story with Nazis and with the sort of full action of the Second World War because I feel that others better equipped than I've done that. There's something about sort of rebuilding Eastern Europe after the Second World war which I think is pretty interesting. And there's a fascinating place in West Berlin...
