I think one of the troubling trends in recent years is measures of narcissism. And I don't suggest that you should be religious because it'll help you get outside yourself. If you're not religious, find a different way. Join a community. Do things that where you contribute rather than are the star of the show. This idea of the union with God goes back to Augustine and says "good life has union with God"
