The Long Arc of Physics Bends Toward... What Is It?

The long arc of physics bends towards... what exactly? We have developed theories to explain the universe and then seen them overturned, replaced by something new. I personally see our cosmos as if it was a giant detective novel. As we collect more information, we can rule out ideas that we had initially. Sometimes we get a clue that provides a huge plot twist. What is it that we are learning anyway?
