The Cosmological Constant and Dark Matter

The reason we know there's a thing in the Tupperware is because of the not only the expansion, but the rate of increase of expansion over time. Is it the same kind of thing with what we're talking about dark matter? How much of this could just be instead of a thing in a box? It's just one of our theories about something is different.
